Employment Law

Hartzog Law Group is dedicated to zealously advocating for both public and private employers. Our attorneys have experience defending employers in federal and state court as well as before administrative agencies, such as the EEOC, ESC, DOL, and OAH. Our attorneys have argued on behalf of employers at the North Carolina Court of Appeals, the North Carolina Supreme Court, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition to defending employers in court, we provide practical advice on difficult workplace issues to employers to help avoid ending up in court.

Areas of Practice include:

  • Assisting and advising clients on all aspects of the employment relationship including decisions regarding hiring and firing, leave requests, requests for accommodation, personnel policies, payment of wages, disciplinary issues, classification issues involving exempt/non-exempt employees and independent contractors
  • Defending discrimination claims brought pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VII, Section 1981, Age Discrimination and Employment Act (ADEA), Equal Protection Claims brought pursuant to Section 1983, Retaliatory Employment Discrimination Act (REDA) and other federal and state statutes
  • Defending claims for wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, hostile work environment, retaliation and other employment claims
  • Defending claims brought by public employees regarding alleged violations of constitutional rights, including Section 1983 due process claims, First Amendment retaliation claims, and State Constitutional Claims
  • Assisting, advising, and representing clients facing Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Department of Labor investigations and charges
  • Defending wage and hour claims brought pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and the North Carolina Wage and Hour Act
  • Assisting and advising clients with employment contracts, such as employee contracts, termination agreements, and non-compete and non-solicitation agreements
  • Assisting and advising employers regarding best practices regarding policies and procedures, including reviewing and revising written policies
  • Conducting employer trainings and seminars
