Dan M. Hartzog, Jr. is a founding partner of Hartzog Law Group, where his practice focuses on representing municipalities and public entities across North Carolina. As both a litigator and town attorney, Dan provides comprehensive legal counsel to towns and counties on all aspects of government matters. Dan has extensive experience defending municipalities, counties, sheriffs’ offices, and other public agencies in civil litigation. He regularly defends claims involving alleged constitutional violations, excessive force, wrongful arrest, employment discrimination and retaliation, land use law, defamation, and general liability. He has secured favorable outcomes for clients in both state and federal courts—including the North Carolina Supreme Court, North Carolina Court of Appeals, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals—as well as before administrative bodies such as the EEOC, OAH, ESC, and DOL. Dan maintains an aggressive motions practice and is frequently successful in obtaining dismissals at early stages of litigation.

In addition to his litigation work, Dan serves as town attorney for several municipalities. In this capacity, he advises elected officials and staff on a wide range of municipal issues, including land use and zoning, open meetings, public records, contracts, and employment matters. Dan also assists municipalities with policy development and provides preventive guidance to help avoid and mitigate legal risks.

Outside of his practice, Dan enjoys spending time with his family, including his twin children, Annie and Cord. In what little spare time he has left, Dan plays bass in the Raleigh area rock band The Five Nines
